Etymologically, MALE and FEMALE are unrelated—MALE comes from the Latin ‘mas’, ‘man’, while FEMALE comes from ‘femella’, ‘young woman’. (via @HaggardHawks) [frees us from the binary nature of the words a bit, doesn’t it?]
