Meaning ‘to stop talking’ or ‘to fall silent’, the expression PIPE DOWN derives from an old naval procedure called ‘piping down the hammocks’: traditionally, a bosun’s pipe or whistle would be blown as a signal that it was time for a crew to retire below deck for the night. (via @HaggardHawks)
