PERSON derives via French from a Latin word, ‘persona’, that originally referred to a mask worn by actors in Roman dramas. It in turn probably comes from a Latin verb, ‘personare’, meaning ‘to resound’—a reference to the fact that the masks would amplify the actors’ voices. (via @HaggardHawks)
