In the early 19th century, the Brothers Grimm wrote horrifying, violent fairy tales – for children. These and other classic stories have since been sanitized by Disney. But the Toronto Library’s Osborne Collection of Early Children’s Books holds the morbid originals.

Thanks to a donation of 2,000 historical children’s books by a British librarian who’d been impressed by the Toronto Library’s service for kids, you can now browse scans of dark stories that fascinated and terrified youth in the 18th & 19th centuries. (via @Hogtown101)
