The PTARMIGAN takes its name from a Gaelic word, ‘tàrmachan’. The initial P was added by mistake, by writers who wrongly presumed that its name must come from the Greek word for a wing, ‘pteron’—which is the origin of words like PTERODACTYL and PTEROSAUR. (via @HaggardHawks)
