After Louis XV died of smallpox in 1774, his successor Louis XVI was vaccinated. The event inspired the hatmakers of Paris to create a new style of headdress called the POUF À L’INOCULATION—the popularity of which helped promote vaccination, and encourage people to be inoculated.
