The Greek word for bodily cartilage was “chondros”. Because the organs of the upper body found below the cartilage of the ribcage were thought to cause melancholy with no outward physical cause, the word HYPOCHONDRIA literally means “beneath the cartilage”. (via @HaggardHawks)
