The word ‘barbarian’ comes from ’barbaros’, the ancient Greeks’ mocking imitation of the speech of all non-citizens – i.e. unintelligible, primitive ‘ba ba ba’s . (via @susie_dent) ‘Immigrant’, ‘migrant’, ‘refugee’ – words that have been spiking for so long in dictionary look-ups that it’s hard to remember a time when they weren’t weighing on the political and public mind.
